Cabo San Lucas - 2/22/2022
As we usually do when we travel, we don't have a plan until we get up, get moving, eat, and have some coffee. When we stay at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, we usually grab breakfast somewhere and then find a pool. We do all inclusive, so we don't have to plan ahead very much. When we go to the pool at our condo, we have to plan ahead a bit and take food and drink with us. It's really not a big deal, but adds to the decision making process.
We got moving yesterday and I headed to the store to pick up some cleaning supplies that we needed for the condo. When I left, it was fairly chilly (for Mexico), which made me wonder if we should go to the pool or not. We decided that rather than go to the pool, we would go to the marina and hit one of our favorite spots, The Usual Suspects, for lunch. We decided to park at the marina, which we've never done. The parking is spacious and cheap ($2 for several hours).
We've been to The Usual Suspects several times. The bartender looks like Mr. Miagi from Karate Kid and is super friendly. They even have a tequila flight called the Miagi Flight, which I like to get. The Cadillac Margherita is excellent and we have found that the food is quite good. Debbie had the chicken quesadillas, which we love, and I decided to try the "best philly cheesesteak south of the border". The quesadillas have the right mix of chicken, onion, green pepper, and tomato that make them delicious. I have to say the sandwich is really tasty.
We sat there for a couple of hours and talked with Mr. Miagi and different folks that came in for a drink. For us, it's fun to get to know different people. Also, we like to watch the fishing boats come in from the morning of fishing. We learned something about the boats that we didn't know. When the boats come in, they have flags flying of what they caught. It's a visual that helps folks tell how well the fishing boats did that day. If a boat didn't catch fish, they got "skunked" that day and have no flags. Here is the coding system that we learned (so far).
1. Blue flag - Marlin
2. Yellow flag - Mahi Mahi (Dorado - green and yellow colorful fish)
3. Red Flag with a T - a fish that was tossed back into the ocean
4. White - shark
The flags don't indicate the size, but one of these days I want to watch when the fishing boats come in and see what they caught. Some of the fish are quite large. Debbie went fishing one time (never again - she gets sea sick) and caught a Dorado. One of the people with her caught a 12'9" marlin that took a couple of hours to land. Sounds like fun, but I haven't tried it yet.
We had reservations at The Office at 7pm. It's a very popular restaurant that you need to make reservations for in advance. We walked from The Usual Suspects to The Office, which took us about 10 minutes. As suspected, The Office was quite crowded. It sits right on the beach with some tables literally in the sand. Debbie had shrimp and I had the Pancho Villa (chicken enchilada, chicken breast, and stuffed pepper. The food and service were excellent and we got to watch them prepare fried bananas tableside for the table beside us. Just a lot of fun and energy for dinner.
Travel Tips:
1. Parking at the marina does cost money, but is way easier than trying to find a spot on the street. Unlike the US, the parking is fairly cheap given the location
2. Carry some cash with you. We discovered as we checked out of the parking garage that they only take cash. Fortunately, we had cash with us. Phew...
3. Be prepared to be approached by numerous vendors for golfing, tours, fishing charters, and even having your picture taken with an iguana (no thanks). I had forgotten about that and had to quickly mentally prepare for saying no or nada mas (leave me alone - rough translation).
4. The marina is a tourist hotspot, so be prepared for crowds. There are a lot of places to just sit by the marina and eat and drink. They're mostly on the expensive side of things.
5. People watching is quite entertaining given the number of people, including a lot of drunk folks.
6. Last year, we found the best tequila tasting place in the marina. I can't remember the name, but it's in a souvenir shop on one of the corners (I know, not very helpful).
Here are the pictures from the day
